phone-sex-operator-1WASHINGTON – Even the smallest mistakes can create conflict in the messy relationship between the White House Press Office and the press. Case in point: the (presumably) honest mistake made in a White House press release this week announcing a briefing call with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and National Security Advisor Jim Jones to discuss the NATO summit.

The wrong phone number for the call was listed on the release, and when reporters called it, they were greeeted by “a soft-voiced female recording that was clearly not Clinton [asking] for a credit card number if you ‘feel like getting nasty,'” as Fox News put it,

A call to the White House alerted the press office to the error and another press release was issued with the correct number, but the conference call was already underway by the time reporters called in.

Not the end of the world, by any means, but enough to get a snippy response from Deputy White House Press Secretary Bill Burton when asked about it.

“A corrected phone number on a press release is probably one of the stupider things Fox News has covered lately,” he said.
