KASTELA, Croatia – A former adult entertainment performer has lost her first bid to become mayor of Kastela in southern Croatia, but she said she won’t give up hope voters can look beyond her past and see the dedicated civil servant within.

“I’ll try again in four years,” Lidija Sunjerga said after garnering only 3.3 percent of the vote in the recent election. “I can provide a better life to people here. They were just not ready to accept me, probably because of my past. I have not lost my faith.”

She brushed off political rivals who compared her work in adult films to prostitution.

“I was selling [my body], not yours,” Sunjerga quipped in typically unabashed fashion.

Sunjerga is not the only current or former porn starlet with political aspirations. In the U.S., Stormy Daniels is eyeing a potential run for a Senate seat in Louisiana, Mimi Myagi is rumored to be running for governor of Nevada, and Mary Carey is a perennial gubernatorial candidate in California. Italian porn star Cicciolina continued to perform in adult films while seated in Parliament.
