deadspaceREDWOOD CITY, Ca. – The adult-themed game Dead Space has sold 1.4 million copies since its debut last year, Visceral Games GM Glen Schofield has announced. While those numbers are not setting the video game world on fire, they are acceptable to the company in a year in which less people bought video games than they normally would have in a healthy economy.

“Do I wish it sold more,” Schofield told Gamespot. Absolutely. But the critical acclaim and the number of awards – we’re at 75 and counting now – have made [Dead Space] bigger than just the number of sales. If you look at used sales and rentals, we’re looking at probably 3 or 4 million people who have played the game.”

The R-Rated Dead Space is available for play on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, and a Wii series entry Dead Space: Extraction has been announced for release later this year. Schofield insisted there is a market for adult-themed games on Nintendo’s console.and Schofield says the action-oriented first-person shooter advantage Wii has should not the hurt the growth or expansion potential for Dead Space, though he doubts the game is suitable for portable platforms.

“I want to stay true to the vision of Dead Space, and that is about dismemberment, zero G, and stuff like that. We’d have to make some compromises that I am not willing to make yet.”
